Goodwood's final meeting of the season cancelled due to a waterlogged track
Goodwood's final meeting of the season has been cancelled due to a waterlogged track, leaving a day without racing in Britain.
The track had been due to host an inspection at 8am on Sunday morning in advance of its afternoon fixture, but the decision was made early on Sunday morning to call the meeting off.
Goodwood clerk of the course Ed Arkell said: "It's very sad to lose our last meeting of the year but we've had a huge amount of rain, 168.2mm in the last 20 days, that's 6.6 inches.
"We were hoping yesterday we might get through it but another 10mm overnight was the killer.
"We didn't have a chance. It's only in certain areas that water is lying but you can't get round them.
"But we've had a fantastic season, with the Qatar Goodwood festival the highlight – Stradivarius, Too Darn Hot, the Japanese horse Deirdre plus Pinatubo."
Newton Abbot had also been scheduled to race today but an even earlier decision to cancel the meeting at the Devon course was taken on Friday due to a waterlogged track.
There are still two meetings set to take place in Ireland today at Limerick and the Curragh, with the latter meeting featuring three Listed races and the Tote Irish Cesarewitch.
The wet weather has claimed several fixtures in Britain in the past week, with last Monday's card at Pontefract, Tuesday's meeting at Catterick and Thursday's fixture at Ayr joining Newton Abbot and Goodwood on the list of cancellations.
Monday's meeting at Windsor is also under threat, with the Berkshire track announcing an inspection will take place at the course at 7.30am on Monday morning.
The going is heavy for the track's penultimate meeting of the season, with 16.6mm of rain falling since declaration time on Saturday.
Haydock's fixture this Friday was also cancelled a week in advance due to a waterlogged track.
