Chepstow ground continues to ease as public shut out of Welsh Grand National

The Coral Welsh Grand National (2.50) will be run on ground with plenty of ease, although clerk of the course Libby O'Flaherty is delighted with the way the track has coped with recent rain.

A total of 31 millimetres fell during December 24 and 25 to leave the official going description as soft, while conditions remained damp through Sunday.

"We've had three millimetres of drizzle and there are still bits and bobs around, while tomorrow morning we have a front coming up and there is the potential for between one and five millimetres," said O'Flaherty on Sunday. "It's only getting easier and it wouldn't surprise me if heavy entered the description.

"This time last year we'd had around 180 millimetres and this year it's been nearer 46 millimetres so it's some difference. When I saw the rain gauge this morning I thought it would be walking very easy but I was pleasantly surprised."

Chepstow's biggest day of the year will be held behind closed doors after the Welsh government announced new restrictions on major events from Sunday.
