Popular lightweight Jack Mitchell targets March return after shoulder operation

Jack Mitchell is hoping to return to race-riding at the end of March after undergoing minor surgery to his shoulder that has ruled him out since early January.

The popular freelance enjoyed his best ever year in 2018 when partnering 66 winners, highlighted by a Listed success on Classical Times in the Cecil Frail Stakes at Haydock in May.

Newmarket-based Mitchell, who rides mainly for Roger Varian, Hugo Palmer and Simon Crisford, rode four winners in January before signing off to have a niggling issue finally sorted out.

The 30-year-old said: "I had an operation to repair a little issue with my shoulder about three weeks ago and the surgeon's diagnosis is good.

"I was planning to come back around Cheltenham week but as there are five days without Flat racing after that, it may well be a bit longer. I'm not sure when I'll be back riding out but I'm back in the gym and having physio at the moment."

Rather than kick his heels at home, Mitchell has been busy out on Newmarket Heath of late. He added: "I've been into Roger's a couple of times as well as Hugo's and Simon Crisford's, and they all seem to have some nice horses for the season. I'm looking forward to getting back."
