Owen Burrows thinking big for his rising stable stars Anmaat and Alflaila
Owen Burrows is targeting more big-race success this year with rising stars Anmaat and Alflaila, who he hopes can establish themselves as the new flagbearers for his yard on the global stage.
Burrows has celebrated two Group 1 triumphs in Britain this season with Hukum and Minzaal, but the former suffered a career-threatening injury after his Coronation Cup win, while Minzaal was retired after his Sprint Cup heroics this month.
However, the trainer believes he could have two ready-made replacements for the future in the Shadwell-owned pair Anmaat and Alflaila, who have some major international targets for the rest of the year.
Impressive Rose of Lancaster Stakes winner Anmaat is in line for the Prix Dollar at Longchamp on Arc weekend, while Strensall Stakes hero Alflaila could be set for an ambitious tilt at the £600,000 Bahrain International Trophy in November.
"We're very fortunate that after Minzaal's retirement it's great to have these two showing they're capable of competing at the highest level soon," Burrows said.
"For Anmaat to win the John Smith's Cup and Rose of Lancaster like he did shows he's still incredibly progressive and the same goes for Alflaila, even if he's a year younger. He's really getting his act together and that step up in trip suits him well.
"Anmaat is rated 117 so he's bang up there now, but hopefully Alflaila can step up at the end of this year and beyond to get into the top company as well.
"We feel the Prix Dollar is Anmaat's race. Alflaila will probably run a week later in the Darley Stakes at Newmarket, but there's a good chance he'll go to Bahrain which the Strensall was a 'win and you're in' race for. We feel that could really suit him."
Burrows also revealed there is a chance Hukum could make a return to the track in the future should he continue to progress during his recovery.
He added: "Hukum is rehabbing very well and it's not a done deal that he's retired yet. If his rehab continues to go as it has done he might come back into training, but it's a little early to say at the moment."
