The big decision comes now if you want to make money out of this jumps season

If the Racing Post were to close tomorrow and the chance was offered to retrain, like an overgrown 13-year-old I would probably try my hand at being either a wine buyer or a pop music critic.

Yet for all the dreamed-of hedonism, wine buyers will often spit rather than drink, and music writers give away most of what they review. There is just too much of a good thing for one person, however much we might enjoy them. It has been one of the most valuable lessons of my career to find that the same applies to racing.

Regular readers will have heard the evangelism over specialisation before. The difference now, with the start of the jumps season proper just weeks away, is that there will be more in the way of practical advice for those looking to get started on their own project.
