We all have our betting foibles. Those who know professional punters will tell you that not even they are exempt from the tics that occasionally bring all of our spirits crashing down, as you realise not only the mistake you have made, but also exactly why you have made it.

The lucky ones among us are those who know themselves well enough to keep their less-helpful instincts in check. Self-appraisal is an underrated skill, and in fields far wider than just betting on horses.

I think I know my weakness, or at least the primary one. I am just that little bit too devoted to the idea of value.
