Heroic stable staff deserve their pay rise - but where's the money coming from?
Fletch is a stable lad I have known for quite some time in one way or another. He used to work for my father in Newmarket, then spent many years with Sir Henry Cecil, and now is a member of staff with Richard Spencer and Rebel Racing.
Fletch has been in racing for a long time and his enthusiasm for the sport appears to be undimmed. He still rides out every day and regularly travels horses to the races as well.
It is something of a running joke that Fletch, despite his advancing years, does not have an easy time of things with the horses. Day in, day out he gets thrown about on the Heath by fresh and exuberant thoroughbreds, his skills as a rider meaning he can take on just about anything and his nerve remaining as steely as that of a younger man.
