One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on Saturday
One trainer
Andrew Balding has already saddled 110 winners this season, including a Royal Ascot triumph in the Queen’s Vase with Dashing Willoughby, and his good season can continue at his local track Newbury.
Five runners will travel less than nine miles from his base at Kingsclere – including course-and-distance winner Shadn, who has a fine chance in the Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes (2.55).
Pivoine (2.20), Johnny Drama (3.30), Lariat (4.40) and Oloroso (5.15) complete the home team while further afield Stone Of Destiny will represent the yard in the Ayr Gold Cup (3.50) – a race they have won twice in the last seven years with runners at 20-1 and 13-2, so do not let his double-figure price put you off.
One jockey
One rider who will likely be relishing the long drive to Ayr more than most is Angus Villiers, who will be participating in some of the most valuable races of his career.
The apprentice, who is based with Richard Hughes and still claims 7lb, has two huge opportunities to show the racing world his talent.
David O'Meara fares well in valuable Scottish handicaps and has turned to Villiers for the ride on Intisaab in the Ayr Gold Cup (3.50).
The claimer is also aboard Presidential for Roger Fell in the Silver Cup (2.40). Villiers has had a breakout first season, riding for 27 different trainers and partnering nine winners.
Zak Wheatley, another 7lb apprentice, will join Villiers in riding in the Ayr Gold Cup. Wheatley will be hoping his claim can improve the chances of his mount Justanotherbottle for Declan Carroll.
One horse
Mystery Power had the perfect start to his career with a winning debut at Haydock and followed that with a convincing victory at the July Meeting at Newmarket.
However, the two-year-old son of No Nay Never failed to perform as expected when coming up against the impressive Pinatubo at Goodwood in the Group 2 Qatar Vintage Stakes, eventually beaten 15 lengths.
Pulling hard and failing to get a clear run when needed, the Richard Hannon-trained colt perhaps had a bad day at the office and a case can be made that the drop back to six furlongs will suit his free-going nature in the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury (2.55).
It will be interesting to see if he can bounce back to the sort of form which meant he was sent off half the price of Clive Cox's subsequent Solario Stakes winner Positive.
One race
First run in 1804, the Ayr Gold Cup (3.50) was initially only open to horses bred and trained in Scotland. Originally run over two miles, the race was shortened to a mile in 1870 and then again to six furlongs in 1908.
The favourite in this year's running is Ger Lyons' representative Buffer Zone, who bids to win the race outright for Ireland after the Fozzy Stack-trained Son Of Rest dead-heated with Baron Bolt last year.
Buffer Zone will be ridden by Colin Keane, who is battling it out with Donnacha O’Brien for the Irish Champion Jockey title, and his mount returns after winning convincingly at the Curragh only six days ago.
