One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on Saturday

One trainer

David Elsworth has had only five winners this season but he has still accrued more than £300,000 in prize-money as his most recent success was with Sir Dancealot in the ultra-valuable Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last month.

Sir Dancelot last year followed up victory in the Lennox Stakes by winning the Unibet Hungerford Stakes (3.35) and is tasked with repeating the feat. Like last year he must carry a penalty, but he still figures highly on weight-adjusted Racing Post Ratings, and is at his best over seven furlongs.

Elsworth has another leading contender in the preceding 7f handicap (3.00) as the likeable Ripp Orf has been given a chance by the handicapper despite largely running with credit. A hugely successful campaign in 2018 saw him reach a mark of 98, but after six defeats this term he is down to a rating of 92, which is 1lb lower than the figure he last defied. The booking of Jason Watson, who was aboard for his last win, also looks to be a positive move.

One jockey

Champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa has picked up five rides at Newbury, with the headline act being Morando in the Group 3 Unibet Geoffrey Freer (2.25). Morando was out of his depth behind Enable in the King George but was an impressive eight-length winner of the Ormonde Stakes the last time he tackled this company.

Any rain will be in the favour of Morando, whose best efforts have been achieved with cut in the ground, and he sets a solid standard for his rivals to aim at.

In addition to riding Secret Art (1.15), Toy Theatre (3.00) and Donjuan Triumphant (3.35), De Sousa can also look forward to riding the promising Sun Power in the Listed Denford Stakes (1.50). His mount has taken a marked jump forward with each start and was only narrowly denied in a Listed race at Ascot last time.

One horse

Sun Power is a progressive juvenile but will need to improve again to win the Denford Stakes (1.50) if Juan Elcano replicates the level of form he displayed in defeat in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket's July meeting.

That was a smart performance on just his second start and the son of Frankel, who was purchased for 360,000gns as a yearling, could yet do better. His trainer Kevin Ryan is in superb form and has sent out 11 winners at a strike-rate of 30 per cent in the last fortnight.

One race

It's by no means the best race of the day but the Unibet Grey Horse Handicap (2.45) at Newmarket is a unique spectacle and also a decent betting race with 16 horses set to go to post.

Chatham House is towards the head of the market after finally getting his act together at Newbury last week on a day trainer Richard Hannon dominated by sending out a five-timer.

That victory was achieved at the 11th time of asking but the three-year-old won in the style of a horse with more to offer and connections will be hoping they have finally found the key to unlock his undoubted potential.
