One trainer, one horse, one jockey and one race to watch on Saturday
Trainer
Paul Nicholls registered his best seasonal tally despite the curtailed start to the 2020-21 season and on the day he is crowned champion trainer once again, he saddles an array of future stars and top-class talent at Sandown.
Nicholls passed his previous best total of 172 winners at Taunton on Wednesday and could make an impact early on Saturday with both Celestial Force and Flic Ou Voyou in the bet365 Novices' Championship final Handicap Hurdle (1.55).
However, his star attraction on the day is King George VI Chase winner Frodon, who aims to finish his brilliant season on a high in the bet365 Oaksey Chase (2.30) under regular rider Bryony Frost.
Nicholls relies on the unexposed novice chaser Enrilo in the day's big race, the bet365 Gold Cup (3.40), on a day where the celebrations for him and his yard will be in full swing as he becomes a record-extending 12-time champion trainer.
Horse
There is one star who will be talked about more than most before, during and after racing and that is Altior.
The record-breaking 11-year-old carried all before him in the two mile chasing division in his pomp, with two Champion Chase and three victories in bet365 Celebration Chase (3.05).
However, he has endured a frustrating season having been limited to just one appearance, when second in the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton, and missed his intended engagement in the Queen Mother Champion Chase for the second season in succession.
The heroine that day, Put The Kettle On, takes Altior on instead of waiting for the Punchestown festival next week and is a formidable opponent.
Jockey
It will be a day Harry Skelton has dreamt of since his very first ride as he is crowned champion jockey following a stellar season.
Skelton reached an unassailable position of 151 winners at Exeter on Thursday evening following a thrilling title battle with Brian Hughes and has a full book of rides at Sandown
Four of those rides come for Paul Nicholls – including the well-fancied Enrilo in the bet365 Gold Cup (3.40) – with the remaining three coming for his brother Dan.
Whatever the outcomes this will be a historic day for the Skeltons.
Race
The season-ending card has always been headlined by the bet365 Gold Cup (3.40) and this year's running looks ultra-competitive as the dangerous duo of Rachael Blackmore and Henry de Bromhead aim to finish the British season off in style following their fantastic spring.
Blackmore and De Bromhead laid siege to a host of the big races at the Cheltenham Festival, including the Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase, Ryanair Chase and Cheltenham Gold Cup before they teamed up for a history-making success with Minella Times in the Grand National a fortnight ago.
They team up for more glory in the 3m5f contest with Plan Of Attack, who has been well supported since his participation was confirmed earlier in the week.
However, success is not a forgone conclusion with the likes of Enrilo, Kitty's Light and Badger Beers Trophy winner El Presente all on the heels of the market leader in the betting.
