'Nothing will stop me' says Mosse as he takes on new challenge in Britain

Gerald Mosse is one of the best travelled jockeys in the world, so a 500-mile round trip to pay a first visit to Newcastle on Thursday should not present any challenge to the veteran French jockey.

Multiple Group 1 winner Mosse, 51, became the first Frenchman to win the Melbourne Cup and since 2002 has split his time between Hong Kong and Europe.

But after accepting a retainer to ride for Hong Kong owner Dr Johnny Hon, Mosse has relocated to Newmarket this year so he can be nearer to his employer's 40 British-trained horses.

"I'm living in Newmarket now and I'm happy to be here," said Mosse. "It's going to be a big journey from here but if we have to go we have to go. They tell me it's a lovely track. I'll be happy to discover what it looks like.

"Hopefully I'll be there on time but it doesn't look too difficult when I'm used to travelling worldwide."

Mosse's three rides include the Hon-owned Global Wonder, trained by Ed Dunlop, and Godolphin's Extra Mile. He has already proved he is a quick learner in Britain, riding winners at Lingfield, Wolverhampton, Kempton, Windsor, Yarmouth and Salisbury on his first appearance at those tracks.

Hon secured the top lot of the Craven Breeze-up Sale on Tuesday when a Scat Daddy two-year-old was bought for 800,000gns.

Mosse said: "We have a lot of young horses, so you have to spend time on them to educate them and make sure they have the right message to be able to perform. When the owner retains me I think it's common sense to be here full time and sit on them."

He has ridden more than 2,300 winners and has no plans to slow down. "I'm not looking for numbers, I'm just happy to do what I do," said Mosse.

"I'm a young 51. To be honest I think I'm born to be like this. I don't think anything will stop me. Mentally and physically everything is still 100 per cent. When I feel things are getting difficult or my physique doesn't help me or mentally I'm getting tired I think I will jump off.

"Newmarket is a new challenge and I like challenge, so I think it will suit me well."
