Newbury newborn: excitement of winner at the races helps birth of baby Jack
Nothing can beat the thrill of backing a winner and Kim Sevier will never forget the moment her £2 bet won at Newbury – as the excitement helped her to go into labour and then give birth to baby Jack later that evening.
Jack was expected to arrive two days prior to the evening fixture on Thursday July 11, which Kim attended with her husband Nick and their family, and following Ragstone View's victory in the opening apprentice handicap, the horse she backed, Kim entered the early stages of labour.
Before the fifth race, which was won by the aptly named Away He Goes, Kim and Nick were instructed to go to the nearby John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and at 11.48pm baby Jack was born. As a congratulations on his birth, the racecourse has given Jack a life membership at the track.
Sevier said: "He was due on the Tuesday [9th] and we planned to go to Newbury on the Thursday as my Nan was 93 and we always go to the races for her birthday.
"In the morning I had a few twinges but I didn't think it was anything. I had a bet on the first race and had a winner, my husband had a winner on the second race but by the third the feelings were coming fast and I was just pacing around and walking in circles.
"I rang the hospital and they said 'you need to come in, we think you are quite far into labour' and we left the racecourse. We had him about three hours later and Jack is doing really well at the moment!"
She added: "All of our family quite enjoy the races, we always tend to go to the races around my Nan's birthday and we like the evening meetings. It was a strange night, it was quite surreal so I'm sure the next time we go will be a bit different."
The racecourse were understandably delighted to hear the news of baby Jack and look forward to seeing their youngest lifetime member at the track.
Marcomms and sponsorship director Harriet Collins said: "How exciting to have our first Newbury baby, and a huge congratulations to the happy parents Kim and Nick. We are delighted to offer baby Jack a lifetime membership at Newbury and look forward to seeing him here in the near future."
