Miracle horse Edwulf leaves Joseph O'Brien to join Enda Bolger

Edwulf, who made a miraculous recovery from a near-death experience to win the Unibet Irish Gold Cup in 2018, is to continue his career with Enda Bolger.

The JP McManus-owned ten-year-old, formerly trained by Joseph O'Brien, almost died at the Cheltenham Festival in 2017 when he collapsed in the closing stages of the four-mile National Hunt Chase won by dual Grand National hero Tiger Roll.

On his second run back following that drama, Edwulf emotionally landed the Grade 1 Leopardstown event under Derek O'Connor, getting up close home to defeat track specialist Outlander by a neck and evoke memories of his medical team's heroics at Cheltenham.

He has failed to win in five subsequent attempts and was last seen finishing third of four behind Monalee in the Red Mills Chase at Gowran Park in February.

Campaigned predominantly in top-level races since his Irish Gold Cup success, Bolger is lowering his sights with Edwulf, who has been granted a hunters certificate and will be aimed at point-to-points.

Bolger said: "Edwulf has been with us for about six weeks. He's got a hunters certificate and while there are no plans as such, we'll probably be looking at running him in point-to-points depending on how he is. We'll see how things go."

Edwulf is not the only high-class recruit to enter Bolger's ranks recently. The ten-year-old joins the former Paul Nicholls-trained Movewiththetimes, who was a heavily backed 8-1 joint-favourite for the Galway Plate in July, and Alan King's dual Grade 1 winner Yanworth, who was pulled up in a Listowel hurdle on his first start for the stable last week.
