Victoria Smith hopes her appearance in the saddle as a transgender jockey in a Warwick charity Flat race on Wednesday will help give confidence to anyone in a similar position to come out.

Smith, 53, formerly known as Vince when riding more than 250 winners and training numerous winners, including Group 3 scorer Blitzkrieg, came out to friends and family at the end of last year.

Returning as a jockey for the first time since making her announcement, Smith finished second in the contest and said she had felt accepted during the day.

“Everyone’s been brilliant," she said. "The girls in the weighing room and everyone here at Warwick have been very open and helpful – I feel very accepted.

“To be asked to come back and be given the chance to ride as a transgender jockey was something I never thought would happen. It’s quite amazing.

"I did this for me but hopefully it’ll open up opportunities and if there’s anyone else unsure about coming out, this might give them confidence to do so.”

Smith, who works as a security guard for Godolphin in Newmarket, added: “If I’m asked for another ride I’d be interested. My dream is to ride in the Leger Legends race at Doncaster. I’m on the list for the race next year.”

John Berry, who supplied Smith’s mount Roy Rocket, said: “It’s very nice to be involved and it’s a special occasion. I’m proud of her and pleased I was able to help and be a part of it.”
