The fate of five Grand National winners who tried and failed to emulate Red Rum

Aintree legend Red Rum, famously and heroically, was the last horse in 1974 to complete back-to-back Grand National triumphs – something Cheltenham Festival hero Tiger Roll will try to emulate next month. Here, however, are five horses who have tried and failed recently to repeat the feat the following year.

Mostly unconsidered when springing a 25-1 shock in the world's most famous chase, the popular star of Oliver Sherwood's stable was the people's champion who was lumbered with the hulking weight of 11st 10lb for his repeat bid which he was all but pulled up in.

Won 2011, sixth in 2012
Like Many Clouds, Ballabriggs raced in the green, white and yellow silks of National fanatic Trevor Hemmings and was a taking winner of the prestigious marathon. However, his attempt at Aintree immortality ended when he was sixth behind Neptune Collonges.

Rated 139 going into the National, Comply Or Die burst clear under Timmy Murphy to give David Pipe and the owner and the rider's number one fan David Johnson a famous success. It was one not missed by the handicapper though and the son of Old Vic raced off 154 when second 12 months later to commanding 100-1 winner Mon Mome.

Won 2005, second in 2006
Another Hemmings horse whose victory as a gambled-on 7-1 favourite under Ruby Walsh came by a ready 14 lengths, Willie Mullins' chaser went on to show his class the following season with sterling second-place efforts in what was the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He made it a hat-trick of seconds when outpointed at Aintree by fellow Irish challenger Numbersixvalverde.

Won 2002, sixth in 2003
The second of Nigel Twiston-Davies's National heroes actually fell on his next start over the spruce-covered fences in the following autumn's Becher Chase, but made it round safely in the spring when a 25-1 sixth, beaten 40 lengths by Monty's Pass.
