Role reversal: jockeys poised to lead up in Thirsk stable staff race

Roles will be reversed at Thirsk this month when jockeys lead up stable staff riders for a charity race in aid of Racing Welfare.

It is the first time jockeys have volunteered to lead up for such a race in Britain, with the stable staff nominated to participate by their trainers.

The Creditas ‘Taking Care of Business’ Stable Staff Stakes will offer 12 members of stable staff the opportunity to ride over a mile at the North Yorkshire course on August 31.

Northern-based rider, Paul Mulrennan said of the innovation: “We’re excited to be doing this as stable staff are the unsung heroes of racing. They work tirelessly behind the scenes and I just hope we do as good a job as they do.”

Andy Shaw, chief executive of race sponsors Creditas Financial Solutions Limited, will present a racing saddle to the winning jockey.

Clerk of the course James Sanderson said: “Thirsk is delighted to host this charity initiative on behalf of Racing Welfare.

“All credit to the sponsor, Creditas, the charity-race riders, owners, trainers and to those professional jockeys who are volunteering to lead-up the runners, for their tremendous collective efforts.”

The stable staff charity contest is scheduled to take place at 1.30pm, with the first race of the main programme at 2pm.
