Robert Havlin is excited to be reunited with sprinting star Calyx as the pair head to Haydock for the Sandy Lane Stakes in preparation for Royal Ascot.

Frankie Dettori will ride Too Darn Hot in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh, leaving Havlin to partner Khalid Abdullah's colt who is a top-priced 6-4 for the Commonwealth Cup.

Havlin rode Calyx to his impressive debut win at Newmarket but Dettori took over as he shot clear of his rivals in a memorable win in the Coventry Stakes. Dettori was also on board for his sparkling return from injury at Ascot this month.

Havlin said: "It's a great ride to pick up and I'm really looking forward to it. I rode him when he won on his debut last year and more recently he gave me a great feel in a workout on the Limekilns last week.

The Group 2 Sandy Lane is typically a strong race with the last three winners – Quiet Reflection (2016), Harry Angel (2017) and Sands Of Mali (2018) – taking this before winning at the top level, but Calyx faces weaker competition this weekend and is a top-priced 1-4 shot.

Havlin added: "Obviously he's 1-4 and there are only a few runners but hopefully he can get the job done as a stepping stone to the Commonwealth Cup."

The Kevin Ryan-trained Hello Youmzain could be Calyx's biggest danger, he was an impressive Group 2 winner in France last season and is a general 6-1 chance for the Group 2 contest.

Leodis Dream, True Mason, Vintage Brut Angelic Light and Royal Intervention complete the potential line-up.
