One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on Saturday
Trainer
Charlie Appleby has already caused a Classic upset this year with Adayar and will be aiming to get the Godolphin blue first across the line once again with Hurricane Lane in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (3.45).
Appleby will be up against a five-strong Aidan O'Brien-trained fleet, but holds a credible chance in the race with his Dante winner.
There are also opportunities abound for the trainer at Newmarket, where Sayyida steps into handicap company for the first time (3.50), and Glorious Journey tries to add a Group 3 to his Listed success in the Close Brothers Criterion Stakes (3.15).
Jockey
Rossa Ryan returned to action on Friday after being absent from the track since a fall at Wolverhampton in May.
Ryan suffered a broken collarbone and then appendicitis, which has kept him on the sidelines, but he will be keen to get back in business with a prime Group 1 contender.
Absent at Epsom, Ryan is reunited with Mojo Star for the Irish Derby after the Richard Hannon-trained colt finished a surprise 50-1 second in the Derby under David Egan.
Ryan will also ride Go Bears Go for David Loughnane in the Group 2 GAIN Railway Stakes (3.05) ahead of his Derby ride, with the two-year-old back in action quickly after losing out by a head in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot.
Horse
The William Hill Northumberland Plate (3.30) at Newcastle promises to be fascinating as Trueshan bids to become one of the highest-rated horses to win a handicap off an official mark of 118.
Trueshan was primed for the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, but the Alan King-trained runner was denied the chance to run due to unsuitably quick ground.
The five-year-old has a huge weight of 10st 4lbs to contend with in the 2m½f handicap, resulting in 5lb apprentice Rhys Clutterbuck securing the biggest ride of his career.
Trueshan was last seen in the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes at Chester, where he finished a close second to Japan, and while weight remains an issue, this step up in trip will certainly suit.
Race
On a Saturday with plenty of Group action on offer, there is interest to be found in the Listed Close Brothers Fred Archer Stakes at Newmarket (2.40).
The 2019 St Leger winner Logician and dual Group 1 victor Desert Encounter may not be at the peak of their powers now, but have been brilliant in their prime and take on Group 3 winners Max Vega and Pablo Escobarr in a field of seven.
