Multiple award-winning journalist Chris Cook is to join the Racing Post, it can be revealed.

Cook, who has won the sport's prestigious Racing Reporter of the Year award three times, joins from the Guardian, where he worked for 15 years.

As well as contributing to the Racing Post's unrivalled news team publishing across print and digital, Cook will be spearheading a new morning email newsletter exclusively for Members' Club Ultimate subscribers.

The new appointment comes fast on the heels of the recruitment of Patrick Mullins, the most successful amateur jump jockey of all time, as a feature writer and columnist.

Cook said: "I've been reading the Post since it was launched in 1986 and I haven't missed a copy for more than 20 years, so it's a real pleasure to be joining the team. I've been bumping into Post writers in press rooms all around the country for a very long time and learned a lot from them. I'll have to raise my game to fit in.

"With Cheltenham, Aintree and Classic trials on the horizon, it's an exciting time to join racing's only daily. I can't wait."

Racing Post editor Tom Kerr said: "Chris is a renowned racing journalist and I've admired his work for a long time – I'm delighted the opportunity arose to welcome him to the Racing Post team.

"At a time when racing journalism is in retreat across the general media and unchallenging identikit coverage is rife online, we're proud to be investing further in a world-class team to deliver in-depth, distinctive coverage of the sport. Chris perfectly supports that long-held ambition and I know our readers will value his tenacious reporting and superb contact book.

"I'm also excited about the forthcoming launch of our daily email newsletter for members. Providing subscribers with an impeccably informed morning digest of news, analysis and commentary – with a few tips thrown in for good measure – has been an ambition for a while, and putting one of the sport's best journalists at the helm will ensure it becomes an essential way for racing fans, punters and professionals to start the day."

At the 2020 Horserace Writers & Photographers Association Derby Awards, Cook was the only one of eight nominees across the two key writing categories not to be employed by the Racing Post. He joins the Post next week.

Chris Cook's daily morning email newsletter launches March 22 and is exclusive to Members' Club Ultimate subscribers
