Way To Paris, recent winner of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, and Coral-Eclipse hero Ghaiyyath set the pace in the Cartier Horse of the Year standings after top-level wins in the last two weeks.

The Andrea Marcialis-trained Way To Paris heads the leaderboard on 72 points after a fruitful start to the campaign. The seven-year-old finished second in the Prix Ganay and Prix d’Harcourt and also landed the Group 2 Grand Prix de Chantilly in May.

Ghaiyyath sits second on 70 points after defeating Enable – Cartier Horse of the Year in 2017 and 2019 – and Japan in the Eclipse at Sandown on Sunday, following up his win in the Hurworth Bloodstock Coronation Cup at Newmarket.

Qipco 1,000 Guineas and Investec Oaks heroine Love is joint third on 64 points with dual Australian Group 1 winner Addeybb.

Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby scorer Santiago heads the three-year-old colt standings with 48 points and is joint fourth in the Horse of the Year table with Fancy Blue, a first Classic winner for Donnacha O’Brien as a trainer in the Prix de Diane on Sunday, and short-neck second Alpine Star.

A trio of Royal Ascot winners – Battaash, Golden Horde and Hello Youmzain – top the Sprinter table on 32 points, while Stradivarius leads the way in the Stayer standings after a third success in the Ascot Gold Cup last month.

The awards are decided by three established strands. Points are earned by horses in Pattern races (30 per cent of the total) and these are combined at the end of the season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists/handicappers (35 per cent) and votes from readers of Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph (35 per cent).
