Frankie Dettori declared himself to be devastated after he was handed a ten-day ban for careless riding at Newmarket on Friday that will rule him out of the Qipco King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and all of Glorious Goodwood.

The ban runs from Friday, July 27, the day before the King George at Ascot, until August 5 inclusive, the day after Glorious Goodwood concludes. Dettori added he will consider appealing against the suspension incurred for causing interference to Chicas Amigas, Main Edition and La Pelosa over a furlong out in the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes, in which he rode runner-up Angel's Hideaway.

Speaking after he had finished second aboard Altyn Orda in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes, Dettori said: "I'm devastated. I'll have to think about it [an appeal]. I would have said yes [I'm likely to appeal]. I'll check with our association [the PJA] and look at the videos again."

The ban marked a stark change in fortunes at the meeting for Dettori, who was all smiles on day one of the festival having won the Group 2 July Stakes on Martyn Meade's Advertise.

Should Dettori appeal and the ban be upheld, Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup and Without Parole in the Sussex Stakes are two of the high-profile rides he will miss at Goodwood.

Stewards' verdict

The stewards' report concluded Dettori allowed his mount to shift right without timely or sufficient correction which caused Chicas Amigas to be checked and also caused considerable interference to both La Pelosa and Main Edition. All three horses were unplaced.

Angel's Hideaway finished second, seven lengths adrift of impressive winner Pretty Pollyanna. The stewards considered that the interference had not improved Angel's Hideaway's placing as the filly appeared to be quickening past La Pelosa and Main Edition.
