Dettori delighted as he moves into fifth place on all-time winners' list

Frankie Dettori, propelled to superstardom thanks to his Magnificent Seven at Ascot in 1996, recorded another milestone in his fabulous career at the track on Friday night when the victory of Stream Of Stars edged him past Doug Smith as the fifth winningmost jockey in the history of British Flat racing.

Only Sir Gordon Richards (4,870), Pat Eddery (4,633), Lester Piggott (4,493) and Willie Carson (3,828) are above Dettori, who partnered his 3,112th winner in Britain when the John Gosden-trained three-year-old struck in a 1m4f maiden.

Getting into fifth spot on the all-time British list was a target Dettori, who has re-established himself as one of the world's leading jockeys in recent years, set himself in 2016 when riding his 3,000th winner and speaking of his desire to ride until he was at least 50.

Dettori, 47, spoke enthusiastically when informed of his achievement at Lingfield on Saturday, saying: "I didn't know . . . finally! I've had my eye on it a while and I knew I was close, but I didn't realise it had happened at Ascot. I'm so proud. Just look at the names in front of me."

Dettori added: "I'm not going to get to Willie Carson though. I'd need another 700-odd to move up another place, and that's not going to happen."

Racing's most famous face, Dettori, whose father Gianfranco rode two 2,000 Guineas winners, has had an outstanding career in the saddle.

As well as making headlines all over the world when going through the card at Ascot 22 years ago, he has been champion jockey in Britain three times, has won 17 British Classics, including two Derbys, and a record five Prix de l'Arc de Triomphes.

The Milan native wasted no time extending his lead over Smith – a great jockey who was champion five times in the 1950s before being found dead at the age of 71 in 1989 – by steering Tomyris to victory in the Group 3 Chartwell Fillies' Stakes at Lingfield.

That was for Roger Varian, but it is in tandem with John Gosden that Dettori has reignited his career, and with either Cracksman or Enable he has two live chances of a sixth Arc later this year. Dettori is also contracted to ride for Al Shaqab, a deal that runs until July, when it will be reviewed.
