Brock's dog days are over as he returns to saddle from spell greyhound training

Jockey Danny Brock has resurrected his riding career after a whip furore forced him to quit racing and try his hand as a greyhound trainer.

Brock, 27, gave up race-riding in February when opportunities dried up after he came under fire for using a modified whip to win a race at Chelmsford last September, something he was later cleared of.

Brock takes just his second ride back since returning to riding on Sea Of Cool (5.25) for John Ryan at Lingfield on Friday.

Based just outside Newmarket, Brock received death threats and threats of physical harm on social media after marking Resurrected, who was backed down to 10-1 from 25-1 before winning a 6f contest at Chelmsford.

The rider was originally fined £140 for using a whip with two elastic bands attached, but a BHA disciplinary panel subsequently replaced the fine with a seven-day suspension. Brock stated the elastic bands, which he said were used to hold his whips together in his kit bag, were mistakenly left on when he went out to ride, and that he would never intentionally harm a horse he was riding.

An independent disciplinary panel subsequently agreed, although Brock still found it hard to get rides in the aftermath of the incident.

Brock, who even had to change his phone number since the uproar, is hoping to put the episode behind him and has been riding out for many trainers across Newmarket in a bid to get the wheels back in motion.

He said: "I fell out of love with the game really after what went on and packed it in earlier this year. I couldn't get any rides but three weeks ago John Jenkins sat me down in his office and told me I was too young to retire so I decided to renew my licence.

"John has been like a father figure to me since I started riding out for him when I was just 12 and it was just the kind of incentive I needed. I've a new agent in Sarah Metcalfe who used to book rides for Oisin Murphy so hopefully we can give it a good go this time."

During his time away, Brock prospered with another kind of four-legged animal, and added: "I got a couple of dogs as a hobby really and had a couple of winners at Harlow and ended up with about 15 greyhounds in total. It's good fun and hopefully I can keep that going but primarily I'm a jockey again."
