Third, Ayr, Thursday

It's been a long time between drinks for Arctic Sound, but there are reasons to be optimistic about him following his eyecatching run over 1m2f at the Scottish venue.

The four-year-old showed high-class form as a juvenile, winning four times on turf at around 7f, culminating in a Group 3 success at Newmarket in September 2018.

The Mark Johnston-trained gelding has failed to win since, but he has slipped to 93 from 110 in the ratings as a consequence and is one to keep close tabs on, having finished hot on the heels of a couple of in-form rivals under Joe Fanning.

He did easily best of those held up in this steadily run race, so it's a performance that ought to be upgraded. [Marcus Buckland]

Second, Chelmsford, Sunday

On a day when it was an advantage to race up with the pace, I was really impressed with the effort of Delagate The Lady, who finished strongly from an unpromising position to beat all bar the front-running Vincenzo Coccotti.

A two-time winner at 6f this year, once on turf at Windsor and once on the Polytrack at Chelmsford, the Michael Attwater-trained filly got shuffled back very early on but responded really well to pressure made up a mountain of ground down the outside in the straight.

She is 4lb above her last winning mark but is still on a mark of just 52 and looks capable of exploiting that in the coming weeks. [Marcus Buckland]

Takeonefortheteam
Fourth, Kempton, Friday

Keep the faith in Takeonefortheteam, on whom losses are only lent after this disappointing defeat at Kempton.

It looked as though this strong-travelling performer had outstanding claims of landing a fourth career success and he was backed accordingly.

Having a solid pace to aim at is crucial and he got just that, with rider William Carson ducking inside at the cutaway two furlongs out and looking sure to oblige when he shot into the lead, but ultimately he made his move too soon and lost three places nearing the finish. Compensation surely awaits in the coming weeks. [Dave Orton]

Bielsa
Ninth, Ayr, Saturday

It's fair to say that 2020 hasn't gone to plan for this talented sprinter, who was sent off 5-1 favourite for the Wokingham first time out having won four of his previous starts but has now finished no better than fifth in four races this year.

However, connections opted to have his wind operated on last month. and there was an awful lot to like about this comeback effort when ninth in the Ayr Gold Cup, when he was unlucky to be racing away from the main action towards the stands' side.

It puts him firmly back on track and the big pot he's long promised to bag can't be that far off. [Dave Orton]
