Last week's horses to follow including a 290,000gns buy who 'won as he pleased'

The prolonged dry period has resulted in smaller fields than is normally the case at this time of year but there were still a clutch of horses that caught the eye in the last week.

Did well in the circumstances

Andreas Vesalius
Fourth, Gowran, August 10

Was stopped in his run at least twice when trying to challenge. Whether there was really a gap to go for on the second occasion is debatable, but he was unquestionably the one to attract most interference and was unlucky.

Fourth, Pontefract, August 14

Is worth keeping an eye on as he's dropped in the weights and took a step back in the right direction. He'd have finished a bit closer had he not been slightly hampered in the closing stages, too.

Mark’s Choice
Third, Ripon, August 13

6-16 here before this, found himself contesting the main event this time from 10lb wrong after his latest wind surgery. He posted a massive effort under the circumstances in the first-time visor on this first run for his new yard, underlining his liking for this place.

Summerghand
Fourth, Ripon, August 13

Stable won this in 2011, 2012 and 2014, but he had little chance from where he was drawn but 'won' the four-runner contest on the far side. He has dropped 10lb lower than when gaining his last handicap success in the 2020 Stewards' Cup and the ability is still there.

Eyecatchers

Royal Athena
Third, Kempton, August 8

5,000gns as a yearling and a half-sister to four winners, made a highly encouraging debut, keeping on without being given an overly hard time when it was clear she couldn't win. Hopefully she can progress from this experience.

Is one to keep an eye on now with a view towards handicap company, his late progress catching the eye somewhat. He’ll likely stay 1m2f and looks sure to improve.

Third, Carlisle, August 9

A 140,000gns yearling, is by Little Big Bear's sire, No Nay Never. This was a lovely debut. Her inexperience was evident, but she finished strongly and is a likely improver next time.

Fourth, Kempton, August 10

The second foal of a 5f two-year-old winner, shaped with promise from the back of the field in a race in which the pace held up. She was staying on nicely at the finish without having too hard a race.

Our Little Pony
Third, Beverley, August 11

Had a difficult draw to overcome and emerges with plenty of credit, having finished fast and late down the outside for a place. A winner of 21-runner York handicap under this rider last month, she's versatile in terms of ground and remains on a favourable mark.

Roundabout Silver
Third, Salisbury, August 11

Offered little on his course and distance debut last month so is on the up, albeit again beaten a fair way. Anchored in rear, the leaders got away from him and he posted an encouraging display.

Second, Wolverhampton, August 12

Made up a lot of ground from an unpromising position and is one for the notebook. A three-time winner over course and distance, including off 4lb higher last autumn, it'll be no surprise to see him win something similar next time.

Fourth, Thirsk, August 12

Was resold for 145,000euros as a yearling, having realised 60,000euros as a foal. He finished nicely for fourth and is one to watch for when he's tackling further, as there's a lot of stamina on his dam's side.

A half-sister to multiple Group 2 winner A'Ali and four-time winner Slowmo, made a highly encouraging belated start to her career and is sure to improve for this experience.

First, Kempton, August 10

Got delivered to perfection and made a winning debut. She was well drawn, settled well for a newcomer and once fully organised hit the line strongly. Half-sister to a Group 2 winner (UAE), she ought to relish another furlong in time and looks useful.

Faattik
First, Salisbury, August 11

Won this as he pleased and rates potentially smart. The 290,000gns buy really caught the eye at Lingfield on his belated debut 19 days earlier and showed the clear benefit of that experience on this switch to turf. There was much to like about the way he moved into contention, before sprinting clear, and it'll be fascinating to see what the handicapper says in due course. He ought to get a mile.
