Jack Kennedy performs amazing recovery – before going on to win the race
Jockey Jack Kennedy performed a miraculous recovery at Clonmel on Thursday, hauling himself back in the saddle mid-race before getting his mount home for a sensational victory.
The 18-year-old wonderkid, who is based with top trainer Gordon Elliott, was leading the 2m beginners' chase on 7-2 chance Robin Des Mana, whose slight mistake at the fourth almost resulted in his rider ending up on the turf.
Cue an amazing moment.
Kennedy, already a Cheltenham Festival winner and regular rider for Gigginstown House Stud, was thrown right up the horse's neck before he was shipped sharply left – and then he was forced to hang on to the reins in a show of strength of which any heavyweight champion would be proud.
Kennedy, at the time perched broadside on across the back of his mount (who still continued to race), somehow clambered back aboard in an incredible show of bravery, horsemanship and sheer strength.
Horse and rider were back at the head of affairs soon after before kicking on up the straight. They held off the attentions of the 50-1 runner-up to record an unlikely victory.
Kennedy said: "I was a little bit embarrassed I got thrown out of the saddle as it was, so I said I better try and stay on him. He hit me up into the arse and I got shot out of the saddle.
"It was a silly little mistake and I didn’t really fancy getting galloped on so I did my best to stay on him and thankfully I did. I was lucky the railing was there because I would have been out of the race if it wasn’t.
"I actually thought that I was going to get on the run-in after all of that. He got in close to the last and I could see the other horse coming to me, but he pulled out a little bit extra."
