'I've been doing it long enough' - Gary Moore reaches 1,000 winners over jumps

Trainer Gary Moore reached a career milestone on Thursday when Movethechains provided him with his 1,000th winner over jumps in Britain and Ireland.

"I probably should have trained more than 1,000 winners by now, I've been doing it long enough," Moore said after Movethechains achieved the feat at Lingfield.

Moore's training career has spanned almost three decades; he retired from the saddle in the early 1990s after riding more than 200 winners and started training in 1993.

He singles out Sire De Grugy's incredible 2013-14 season, when he won four times at the top level, as a personal highlight.

Moore said: "I have great respect for Sire De Grugy and what he did in that season when he won four Grade 1 races [Tingle Creek Chase, Clarence House Chase, Queen Mother Champion Chase and Celebration Chase], that's not easy.

"I was very lucky to train him, he's a great mate. He's still with us and he will be for the rest of his career – he's a very special animal to me."

Moore has also saddled 1,179 winners on the Flat, and when asked about his dual-purpose success he said: "It's no secret, it's just common sense."

Movethechains was completing a course-and-distance hat-trick when landing the 2m7½f handicap chase. A return to his beloved Lingfield has been pencilled in for the inaugural Winter Million meeting.

"He's a very nice horse and came to me well handicapped," said Moore. "All I had to do was get him fit and Jamie [Moore] had to point him in the right direction.

"He's going to have a break now and be aimed at the new meeting. Lingfield has done well, we now have a three-day festival in the middle of January and they've put up £1 million in prize-money. It's great, we needed something like this.

"On the Flat they have loads of festivals. Everyone goes on about Cheltenham, but that's all we have."
