It's official: terrific Tiger Roll voted Racing Post Jumps Horse of the Year
He may have held on to Grand National glory by a whisker, but Tiger Roll was voted the 2017-18 Racing Post Jumps Horse of the Year by a clear margin.
The diminutive yet highly versatile chaser, whose finest hour came this month when holding off a late charge from Pleasant Company to win the £1 million Aintree spectacular, was declared the winner at the end of season jumps awards at Sandown on Saturday.
In a competition previously won by the likes of Sprinter Sacre, Many Clouds and Thistlecrack, Racing Post readers cast a record 4,355 votes, of which 1,929 were for Tiger Roll.
With owner Michael O’Leary at Punchestown, the award was accepted by bloodstock agent Mags O’Toole, who purchased Tiger Roll on behalf of Gigginstown at the Brightwells Cheltenham Sale in December 2013.
At just eight, Tiger Roll has already enjoyed a remarkable career. Aside from his Grand National heroics, he has three wins at the Cheltenham Festival to his name – in the Triumph Hurdle, National Hunt Chase and this year’s Cross Country.
Voted into second was this year’s emphatic Champion Chase winner Altior, who was to land the Bet365 Celebration Chase on a day that witnessed four of the award nominees – Native River, Might Bite, Buveur D’Air and Politologue – parade in front of racegoers as end-of-season champions.
Racing Post Jumps Horse of the Year: where the votes went
Tiger Roll 1,929
Altior 776
Native River 691
Might Bite 486
Buveur D’Air 218
Waiting Patiently 147
Politologue 108
