Irish racing raises more than €30,000 to buy vital medical device for children
An Irish racing fundraising initiative for the Children's Health Foundation Crumlin has surpassed its original target by raising more than €30,000 for the purchase of a vital medical device.
Inspired by their visit to patients at the essential health care facility last Christmas, Irish racing figures called on followers of the sport to back the campaign, with the aim of funding the purchase of a spinal cell saver auto-transfusion device.
Jockeys' physiotherapist John Butler and racecourse announcer Paul Quish spearheaded a fundraising drive in 2019 and were to the fore once again this year.
The late Pat Smullen provided inspirational support for the project 12 months ago and the team behind this year's initiative dedicated the current drive in his memory.
Butler said: "It's not a situation anyone would like to be in but people are and they need help, so it's a great thing to be able to do. The device has now been purchased and I'm sure the money left over will be used to buy toys or something to give the children some joy."
He added: "It's a great outcome and we have to thank everyone for their support. From HRI's Barbara White to all the racecourses that named races after the initiative, Elaine O'Farrell from Race Displays, Gillian Carey of Fairyhouse, Antionette Kelly in Crumlin, and all the jockeys and trainers that participated in videos online, as well as media outlets – there are too many names to mention.
"We were delighted that Frances and the Smullen family were happy to have Pat's name attached to this initiative in his memory."
