Another Aussie star? Sunlight follows Black Caviar route with William Reid win
Sunlight made light of a tricky outside draw at Moonee Valley on Friday to register a stunning success in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes under Luke Currie.
In doing so she became the first horse since Black Caviar to double up in the Newmarket Handicap and the William Reid, the last Group 1 of the season in Victoria.
Sunlight had her field covered from early on and took off into a two-length lead turning in, before holding the late charge of Spright from well off the pace.
"I'm in awe of what a star she is, she rises to the occasion every time and she loves the pressure of these elite level races," said trainer Tony McEvoy, who has sent Sunlight out to win three times at Group 1 level.
"Luke's got so much faith in her, he knows what she can and can't do and he rides her so beautifully."
The three-year-old daughter of Zoustar has quickly established herself as one of the hottest properties in Australian racing, and McEvoy said: "It stands the hair up on the back of my neck when you think of the level that she is up with and the great horses of the past.
"These are big-time races and there's so much more to come from her, she could be one of the best of the best."
