Royal Ascot a possibility for The Autumn Sun after remarkable Guineas victory

Europe remains a possibility for Australia's most exciting colt and most expensive stallion prospect after The Autumn Sun produced a remarkable come-from-behind performance to land the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).

Chris Waller admitted he would have given up on The Autumn Sun’s winning chances at the top of the straight had he not experienced similar against-the-odds feats of his champion mare Winx.

“If I didn’t train Winx I wouldn’t have believed that performance but she probably desensitised the emotion of these big race wins,” Waller said.

“That was a glimpse of what she can do and I won’t say any more about her. Full credit to this horse. He’s the next Australian star and I can only tell you how good he is.

“You’re seeing it but he is a very, very good horse.”

The Autumn Sun was the subject of a massive investment by Arrowfield Stud, who bought into the colt after his Golden Rose Stakes victory last September, and he ran down Fundamentalist to win by a head in a last-stride victory.

Surround Stakes winner Nakeeta Jane was a length away back in third place.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy said: “What an effort by this colt. He needed to be outstanding today and he was. He was brilliant. I knew my fellow was going to really finish strong and that’s exactly what he did.

“He ate up the big, spacious Randwick straight and really flew the last bit.”

Waller said he would confer with Arrowfield Stud’s John Messara and Hermitage Thoroughbreds about where to head next with The Autumn Sun which could mean heading to the Doncaster Mile or the Rosehill Guineas.

A clash with Winx could then be on the cards in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on April.

“The exciting part about this horse is he’s not mature yet,” he said.

“That is the next question you have to ask do you want an immature horse taking on the world or be around for a bit longer. It’s a great thing to be thinking about.”

If The Autumn Sun headed overseas the Queen Anne Stakes and the Prince Of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot in June loom as the most likely options.

Messara has previously suggested The Autumn Sun, a potential successor to his rising 22-year-old champion sire Redoute’s Choice, could be too valuable to campaign in Europe and instead he could target the Cox Plate as a four-year-old.

The Autumn Sun is a winner of seven of his eight starts and has earned $3,138,121 in prize-money.
