Redkirk Warrior could switch to King's Stand if the weather forecast is bad

Redkirk Warrior, destined to be the only horse to represent Australia at Royal Ascot, could switch to the King's Stand Stakes from the Diamond Jubilee if the weather forecast is bad.

Frankie Dettori has been booked to partner the seven-year-old gelding, who pleased connections on Saturday in a racecourse workout at Flemington, where he went 1,000 metres (5f) up the straight course.

"He looks magnificent at the moment and hopefully he'll be fit for a queen in a few weeks," said co-trainer David Hayes, who has more than 4,000 winners to his name – among them 90-plus Group 1 victories.

Redkirk Warrior is 13-2 second favourite behind Harry Angel for the Diamond Jubilee, which is his primary target. However, fellow co-trainer Tom Dabernig was on hand at Flemington, after which he said a late change was possible.

"We've got the King's Stand and the Diamond Jubilee, which is the target on the Saturday at this stage, but if there happened to be a forecast for a wet track on the Tuesday, we might consider the switch," said Dabernig, speaking to racing.com. "He's not at his best on a wet surface."

After another workout at Werribee, triple Group 1 winner Redkirk Warrior will fly out on June 6. He will be housed in Newmarket with Jane Chapple-Hyam while he is in Britain, where he began his career with William Haggas, winning at Yarmouth and Ascot as a three-year-old before heading to Hong Kong and then Australia.

He is bidding to become the first Aussie sprinter to win at the royal meeting since Black Caviar in 2012. Former compatriot Merchant Navy is also set for the Diamond Jubilee, although he has been switched to Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle operation by the Coolmore team.
