Pollyanna v Signora as fillies lead the way for Deauville speed test

Seven-length winners of Group 2 juvenile races don't come along all that often and, while allowance must be made for the stock car race which took place behind Pretty Pollyanna, the visual impression of her sprinting clear in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes is hard to forget.

Before that she ran on well to be fifth in the Albany, a race which came hard on the heels of her maiden win and this scopey daughter of Oasis Dream may have more to give as she continues her physical development.

Michael Bell could not be happier with the filly and said: "She's just done one bit of work since her win and it was all we needed to see. Silvestre [de Sousa] rode her and we were all very happy with her.

"There are a lot of variables, but her form is rock solid and if she runs to that rating the others have to improve to beat her. She looks great, she's very easy to train, and she's an uncomplicated ride. I'm very positive and really looking forward to it."

Quinn out for second Morny

Four years on from The Wow Signal's Group 1 day in the sun, trainer John Quinn returns to Deauville with Signora Cabello, a filly who arguably boasts a more streetwise record coming here.

A hard-fought winner of an often-informative York Listed race, she went on to show her battling qualities again when getting the verdict in a three-way struggle for the Queen Mary.

Quinn will have little to worry about on the travelling front either, since Signora Cabello took a trip to Maisons-Laffitte in her stride when accounting for Sexy Metro and Simply Striking in the Prix Robert Papin in July.

He said on Saturday: "She travelled yesterday and seems very well in herself. She's a very unassuming filly and wouldn't blow you away with her work, but so far as one can tell she's in just as good form as she was before the Papin.

"It's a warm race, as you'd expect, but she looks very good."

Land Force bids to follow up Goodwood success

While Aidan O'Brien has been open in adding his own observations on the health of the Ballydoyle string to those which can be inferred from the recent performances from several of his leading lights, Land Force proved a shining exception at Goodwood when knuckling down well to account for Marie's Diamond – who reopposes – over an easy six furlongs.

He had previously finished half a length behind Shang Shang Shang in the Norfolk Stakes over five furlongs, but was effective enough when third in the Marble Hill at the Curragh, suggesting he is adept over both sprint trips.

"We've been happy with him since his Richmond win at Goodwood," said O'Brien. "We haven't done a lot with him since but he seems in good form."

O'Brien fell out of love with the Morny for a while in the years after successes with Orpen (1998), Fasliyev (1999) and Johannesburg (2001), but has made the frame with all three runners since the turn of the decade.

He was quite unlucky in the Super Sprint and continues in great form. It looks as if he's up against some good fillies, but I'm sure he'll give a good account again.

People will assume True Mason was beaten fair and square in the Papin so he's a big price, but he's a very good horse and he'll improve for fitness. The trip will help and so will the draw, as he was stuck on the wing a bit and so did a bit too much too early. He's still a little bit unexposed. Comedy is in great form and loves it on the road. She's there to be shot at, as she has only one way of running, but if they are good enough to get by her, good luck to them. They'll have to go quick.

With only five runners the Papin got a bit tactical as they went slow before turning it on for the last three furlongs. He took a little while to find his action when they quickened up before not getting the clearest of runs, but he finished well. I don’t think there is much between him and the winner [Signora Cabello].

Didier Guillemin, trainer of Sexy Metro
He breezed on the turf at Deauville on Tuesday and went well. He's in good form and I’m hopeful the Robert Papin has toughened him up a bit because he'd never had to fight before. He should be at least as effective over this slightly longer trip as he finished well the other day. It was quite soft when he galloped earlier in the week and he moved well so if any of Thursday’s rain remains in the ground and it were at least good to soft, that would be a help.

He's had a fantastic year already and is still getting better. He'll benefit from going up in trip, but it was a career best over a sharp six furlongs at Goodwood last time. He needs to go up another level, but it's not out of the question. He's very straightforward.
