Melbourne Cup favourite Cross Counter in big-race injury scare

Melbourne Cup favourite Cross Counter has suffered a minor setback but connections are hoping to manage his recovery in time for the Flemington showpiece on November 6.

The Godolphin-owned three-year-old, who is a top price of 10-1, required veterinary attention after suffering a cut to his leg.

Trainer Charlie Appleby said on Sunday: "It's annoying but the Cup is over three weeks away and there is time for him to be ready, provided his recovery is as we expect.

"He will be box-rested for two days, the vets will have another look, and then we will assess everything after that."

Cross Counter announced himself as an exciting stayer when lowering the course record with a brilliant victory in the Qatar Gordon Stakes at Goodwood.

On his most recent start, he just lost out to stablemate Old Persian in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes at York.

The incident is a second blow to Godolphin's big-race aspirations in as many days after Hamada suffered a fatal injury during a routine piece of work at Werribee on Saturday.

Godolphin are also responsible for the home team's main hope Avilius, who is a best price of 11-1 with bet365.
