Huge shock in Japanese Derby as Roger Barows wins at 92-1
There was a massive upset in the Japanese Derby on Sunday as outsider Roger Barows shocked racegoers in the packed Tokyo stands with a 92-1 victory.
The son of Deep Impact settled in second behind the front-running Lion Lion before fending off the fast-finishing Danon Kingly in the final 300 metres to win by a neck.
The winner is entered in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and trainer Katsuhiko Sumii said: "I heard that his owner wanted to go the The Arc. If so, I would like to prepare for it."
Winning rider Suguru Hamanaka said: "I was hoping for a fast pace, so settling in second behind an early strong pace was ideal for us. The colt has plenty of stamina so he held on strongly even after the uphill climb and ran all the way to the line.
"He’s now a Derby horse, so we can look forward to the future.”
Odds-on favourite Saturnalia, who like the winner is trained by Sumii, missed the break and had to settle towards the rear of the field. He made headway late on but finished fourth.
