The winning connections of shock Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero Torquator Tasso
German colt Torquator Tasso landed a huge shock when winning the 100th running of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe for his unheralded connections of trainer Marcel Weiss, jockey Rene Piechulek and owner Gestut Auenquelle.
The trainer: Marcel Weiss
Marcel Weiss is in his second year as a trainer having previously worked for Heinz Jentzsch and Uwe Ostmann. The 44-year-old, who has a string of around 70 horses, trains at Mulheim an der Ruhr, about 50 kilometres west of Dortmund in Germany. He stands 15th in the trainers' title standings in Germany with 15 winners.
The jockey: Rene Piechulek
From a non-racing family, Rene Piechulek, 34, is fifth in the jockeys' championship having ridden 36 winners this year. He started his career in 2007 and was claiming a third victory at the highest level having also steered Torquator Tasso to the Grosser Preis von Baden last month and Sunny Queen to success in last year's Grosser Preis von Bayern. He was riding in the Arc for the first time.
The owner: Gestut Auenquelle
Located 30 kilometres north of Bielefeld, Gestut Auenquelle is owned by Karl-Dieter Ellerbracke and Peter-Michael Endres. Ellerbracke is a longstanding breeder, as well as being the former chairman of the German owners' association and holding the same role at Baden Baden sales. Endres is president of the Dusseldorf racing club. Gestut Auenquelle was champion owner in Germany last year for the first time since 2006, and sits third in the standings this year with 15 wins and €296,825 in prize-money. The stud also stands Soldier Hollow as a stallion.
