'If the winner wasn't 80-1 we'd be saying it was the best Arc for decades'

Racing Post experts give their Arc verdicts

'I haven't got my breath back!'

I still haven't got my breath back! I am of course tremendously biased, but I loved the race. All of the key players came to the fore and if the winner wasn't 80-1 we'd be saying it was the best Arc for decades.

The pace didn't appear to be very strong, but the testing ground took its toll on Adayar and Chrono Genesis, who raced prominently and shot for home some way out.

You have to give Rene Piechulek plenty of credit as he had Torquator Tasso positioned perfectly just behind the leaders and delivered him perfectly to score, with the horse wandering slightly in the closing stages, as he's accustomed to do.

Of those in behind, Sealiway ran a belting race, but for me the main takeout was just how many of these horses I hope will remain in training next year. Adayar, Hurricane Lane, Tarnawa and even Snowfall ran with huge credit, and I'd love to see them all back to try again.

'He was the best horse in a strong Arc'

It was clearly a shock, but Torquator Tasso won well and can rightly be considered champion.

The form of the Preis von Berlin, won by Alpinista at Hoppegarten in August, now looks particularly good. The first three home, Alpinista, Torquator Tasso and Walton Street have won four Group 1s between them since.

The right horses were there at the finish, and if you were to take Torquator Tasso out of the race the finish would have been fought out by the first three in the market, Tarnawa, Hurricane Lane and Adayar.

Take nothing away from the winner, he was the best horse on the day in a strong Arc.
Graeme Rodway, tipster

'This was no fluke'

First of all – what an absolutely thrilling contest and one worthy of the 100th running of the world's best race.

Like many, I was speechless at the finishing line, but this was no fluke victory for Torquator Tasso as most of the major contenders ran cracking races. Hurricane Lane justified the strong market support but was perhaps left with too much work to do at the beginning of the straight, and it was hugely refreshing to hear Charlie Appleby hint that both he and stablemate Adayar – who still ran a big race to finish fourth despite racing keenly on unsuitable ground – may remain in training next year.

What struck me most was how Tarnawa – who headed the market for most of the week – was allowed to drift out to 7-1 at one point, and you can only hope she returns for one more crack next year.
