Clive Cox has had several dazzling days but can rarely have enjoyed such a wondrous weekend. Having landed the Sprint Cup with Harry Angel on Saturday, he struck again with Lady Macapa in the Group 3 Qatar Prix du Petit Couvert.

The five-furlong contest that opened Arc trials day at Chantilly was a first black-type win for the daughter of Equiano, having finished third to Magical Memory at the same level at Newbury last time for her absent trainer, who also had runners at the Curragh.

After the pair had fended off Gold Vibe by a neck, jockey Luke Morris said: "For a number of years Clive has proved he’s very able with sprinters and I’ve been very lucky for him, with Gilt Edge Girl and others. It's great to get an opportunity for him.

"She had to improve a bit to take a hand and the soft ground suited her well. She's very tough and honest.

"She was third over six furlongs last time and I was keen to send her on soon enough to draw the sting out of the others. She stuck her head down and galloped on."

The Abbaye could be next and Morris – who won that race on Gilt Edge Girl in 2010 – added: "If conditions are soft I could see her coming back in three weeks."

In the Group 3 Qatar Prix Gladiateur Vazirabad returned from injury to give Christophe Soumillon his fourth win in five years in the race, recording back-to-back wins with the Aga Khan owned five-year-old in the process.

After Vazirabad had beaten Holdthasigreen by three-quarters of a length his trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre said: “He needed that race and had to have a breather in the home straight.

“This will put him spot on to hopefully go one better in the Prix du Cadran, before attempting a third straight Prix Royal-Oak."

Ebor runner-up Flymetothestars fared best of the British raiders in fourth.
