'I'd love to see him at York' - Baaeed set to follow Frankel path to retirement

William Haggas has revealed that Baaeed is set to follow the route taken by Frankel before bringing down the curtain on a glittering career as he prepares his unbeaten four-year-old for next week's Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Just as Frankel before him, Baaeed has won the Lockinge and Queen Anne Stakes this season, and like Frankel, the Sussex Stakes will be used as a stepping stone to the Group 1 Juddmonte International at York next month. He is then expected to go for the Qipco Champion Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot in October, the race in which Frankel made his final start in 2012 and capped his 14-race unbeaten streak.

Baaeed, who runs in the blue and white of Shadwell, has yet to race beyond a mile, but has been compared to Frankel by many with Haggas making similar comparisons.

"He hasn't much to prove at a mile and his pedigree smacks of further – he relaxes so well," said Haggas. "He's uncomplicated with a great mind and a good turn of foot. I'd love to see him run at York.

"I remember so clearly how Frankel won that race when they were wondering if he'd be as effective up in trip. It was like a bit of work. It made the hairs stand up on the back of your neck and I hope that Baaeed will be able to travel as strongly around the Knavesmire as Frankel did and will be able to use his turn of foot on the straight. Beyond York, he'll go to Ascot on Champions Day."

The Racing Post was granted special access to the Newmarket July course at 5.30am on Tuesday to witness Baaeed's final workout before Goodwood in which he impressed when leaving his regular lead horse Montatham a long way in his wake under Michael Hills.

The son of Sea The Stars is 4-11 with Paddy Power to register a ninth straight win in the mile contest next Wednesday when he could line up against 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace winner Coroebus.

Assessing the opposition next week, Haggas said: "Coroebus is obviously high class. We had horses finish second and fourth in the St James's Palace Stakes, but they were not far behind him. I don't think he was at his best that day and I'm sure Charlie [Appleby] will have done everything to make sure he'll be at his best next week."

Haggas is also preparing for life without Baaeed. "We're just starting to say to ourselves in the yard that we must start to prepare for life after Baaeed," he said. "I know it sounds soft, but he's not going to be around next year for us to enjoy and to find another one is not going to be easy."
