First-time racegoers will be turned off the sport if they continue to be faced with the likes of Ascot's depleted card on Saturday, one experienced on-course layer warned.

Martin Davies made the 150-mile journey from his home in the Welsh valleys to Berkshire, but was not expecting it to be a profitable day when he left.

A host of ground-related non-runners hit the card and led to a walkover in one race, but Davies fears longer damage could be done.
