Soonerthebetter
Fourth, Ayr, Monday

Bought out of Joseph O'Brien's yard for just 3,800gns by trainer Mike Smith in March, Soonerthebetter could prove to be money very well spent on the evidence of this 100-1 fourth.

The half-brother to Simon Crisford's useful four-time winner (up to 1m½f) Trolius was finishing arguably best of all behind runaway winner Summa Peto and will have to be of major interest in handicaps over longer trips from now on.

Gelded after showing ability on his debut over a mile at Dundalk in January, he had subsequently been well held at the same track, dropped back to 7f, but this was much like it. [Marcus Buckland]

Murau
Fourth, Wolverhampton, Wednesday

Murau is bred for stamina, being out of a 2m-winning half-sister to his trainer James Fanshawe's smart stayer Invermark, so this was a promising debut over 1m½f.

The three-year-old was green, missing the break and racing towards the rear, but he stayed on encouragingly in the straight to finish fourth behind odds-on favourite Lankaran.

Murau seems sure to improve and is one to look out for in a maiden or novice over a longer trip. [Andrew Sheret]

Solar Screen
Third, Goodwood, Friday

Solar Screen was the eyecatcher of Goodwood’s first meeting of the year as he ran well against a pace bias when third to the intelligently ridden Orin Swift.

It was quickly apparent that the David Simcock-trained gelding, an unexposed four-year-old who was making his handicap debut and having his first run for the yard, was up against it held up in last place given the lack of a solid gallop and he deserves plenty of credit for finishing as close as he did.

He should be all the better for this first start since last August and a first start since being gelded and he should be able to make amends granted a more truly run race over this trip. [Richard Young]

Second, Newmarket, Saturday

A tidy winner of a Newbury handicap on his previous start, Came From The Dark didn't get a totally clear shot at Saturday's Group 3 Palace House Stakes yet only just failed to get up and was in front soon after the line.

The Ed Walker-trained five-year-old might have prevailed with a completely uninterrupted run through and, though he had had his previous 14 races in handicaps, he is clearly well up to winning at Group level.

Although the King's Stand would be a further step up at Royal Ascot, he was a close second on his only previous start at the track and could be just the type for that Group 1. [Ron Wood]

Wink Of An Eye
Second, Goodwood, Saturday

Although Wink Of An Eye was flattered by his proximity to the eased-down Fairy Cakes, he showed more than enough to suggest he will be winning races in the near future.

Having his first run since being gelded on this handicap debut and reappearance, the William Haggas-trained three-year-old had to wait for room early in the straight but he made up a good deal of ground in the closing stages to secure second place.

His dam was a Listed winner over 1m2f and on this evidence he may well get a bit further, but he’s more than capable of making his mark over this trip in similar company in the near future, especially as there’s further improvement to come. [Richard Young]
