Girl power! Women on top in memorable Shergar Cup
The Girls' anthem for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot on Saturday was 'Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves', and Josephine Gordon, Hayley Turner and Hollie Doyle did just that as they were crowned team champions, with Turner winning the individual title.
The Girls amassed 76 points, six more than Europe, with Turner winning the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle trophy with 39 points.
Turner said: "It's brilliant, I can't really believe it, it's massive. I've been coming to the Shergar Cup for 12 years now and it's a very special day.
"The progression of female jockeys is something that's really being pushed and discussed, and this is a fine example of how well girls can do in racing."
She continued: "It's been a fantastic day. The whole family is here and they're having the best day ever.
"It was Alistair Haggis who got me on to the team 12 years ago – he really pushed for me, so I think he's up there looking down on me."
Team captain Josephine Gordon reflected: "Today proves that girls are better than boys! It's brilliant to compete against the best jockeys in the world.
"Today's been really good fun and it's one of the best days of the year. We've thoroughly enjoyed our day and it's great to win."
She added: "Shergar Cup day is a bit more of a relaxed day. People have more fun in the weighing room and it is more of a family day out.
"It's back to reality tomorrow as I'm at Windsor, but I'm on a bit of a high right now."
Doyle, who partnered Tis Marvellous to victory in the opener, was equally delighted to be part of the winning team.
"It's been an amazing afternoon," she said. "It was a very close finish but I'm delighted we've won."
