Frankie Dettori like 'a kid at Christmas' as he has first ride back at Kempton

Frankie Dettori returns to action at Kempton on Tuesday and, speaking live on BBC Breakfast this morning, he said he is feeling as excited as a kid at Christmas about getting back on the racecourse.

Dettori has just his fifth ride in Britain in 2020 – and first since the resumption of the sport – on hot favourite Galsworthy in the 1m4f maiden stakes (4.30).

His mount is a steady 10-11 favourite following two promising efforts as a two-year-old.

Dettori said: "I'm good to go. It was nice to put a shirt on and get out of my pyjamas. I'm like a kid on Christmas morning, I can't wait to go racing.

"It's over three months since I've competed but we've still got to exercise the horses, we've got 3,000 of those in Newmarket. It was nice yesterday to watch live sport for the first time. It's going to be a bit weird with no crowds but we're following the golden guidelines.

"We had ten races yesterday and it's quite remarkable that two weeks today we're going to start Royal Ascot behind closed doors. That's going to be quite different. But at least sport is on TV and we're going forward."

On riding wearing a mask, he added: "I've been training in the gym and riding in the morning with it to get used to it. It's not the same but we have to do everything we can to keep everyone safe. This is not going to be forever but, for the time being, so be it."

Money for Murphy as champion's Kempton mounts are backed

Punters are putting their faith in a number of rides for champion jockey Oisin Murphy, who is in action at Kempton on the second day since racing's resumption.

Murphy got off the mark yesterday when veering through traffic to strike on Alignak and has seven chances on Tuesday.

Since Monday there has been significant support for St Gallen, who is a 9-4 favourite for the 1m2f handicap (1.35), while Science (2.45), City Walk (3.20) and Singing The Blues (5.05) have also been backed.

Elsewhere, the Mark Johnston-trained Dark Vision has seen plenty of money this morning. An explosive winner of the 2018 Vintage Stakes as a juvenile, Godolphin's representative is now a general 100-30, having been as big as 9-2 last night.

The key mover at Newcastle is Significantly, who has been backed into favouritism for the first division of the two-year-old maiden (3.05). The Karl Burke-trained runner is a 9-4 chance.

Conditions at Newcastle and Kempton are currently standard to slow ahead of the afternoon racing. Sunny and warm weather is forecast at both venues.
