'Jodami was the horse of a lifetime, really, the sort you dream about'
A quarter of a century ago, Jodami gave the north its most recent Gold Cup
He had the lot, this horse. He looked the part, a big, strong, glossy beast who prompted the description 'old-fashioned chaser' from those who knew the type. He had the temperament, an easy demeanour but easily roused to battle stations when the occasion demanded. He had the luck to be matched with the right trainer, whose benevolent guile afforded him an eight-season career and victory in every campaign. And Jodami had the ability to match all these gifts.
"He was such an efficient machine," says Anthea Morshead, who as Anthea Farrell rode Jodami to victory in his first bumper and first novice chase.
"He was very straightforward to train. Even I managed to train him," says her father Peter Beaumont with a smile. Big-race jockey Mark Dwyer recounts his finest hour as undramatically as a newscaster relaying the football results, such was its untroubled nature.
