Lightning Spear is in prime condition for Saturday’s Qipco-backed Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day as trainer David Simcock aims to take out the middle leg of a Group 1 treble for his yard.

The first leg was secured over the weekend when Desert Encounter captured the Canadian International at Woodbine, while juvenile Raakib Alhawa, who won at Newbury on his debut, is set to step up to the top level in the Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster next weekend.

Lightning Spear, owned by Qatar Racing, has already struck at the highest level this season when making his Group 1 breakthrough at the 16th attempt in the £1 million Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.
