Festival winner The Druids Nephew retired after injuring tendon
Neil Mulholland has elected to retire his stable stalwart The Druids Nephew after the 12-year-old tweaked a tendon in his last start on New Year's Day.
The veteran, who celebrated his finest hour when winning the 2015 Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, was pulled up by Noel Fehily when last seen in a 3m2½f handicap chase at Cheltenham behind Beware The Bear.
Mulholland said: "He tweaked his tendon. It's nothing major, but at the same time the owners were quite keen he stayed sound to go hunting and maybe do some Retraining of Racehorses classes.
"He's finished his career in good shape and is by no means retired due to a massive injury. There's still plenty of good days left for him in retirement."
Mulholland oversaw all four of The Druids Nephew wins in his 28 career starts. The gelding recorded a peak RPR of 158 in 2015 for that festival victory and accrued in excess of £100,000 in prize-money for his connections.
