Enable: we missed her for months but the superstar filly made it worth the wait
Lee Mottershead on a frustrating but ultimately glorious year
It was only in the autumn that we were reacquainted with Enable. When we did see her we got an Enable who was short of her breathtaking best, yet even a slightly below-par version of European racing's sweetheart was good enough to win the race that mattered more than any other.
Through 2017 she was a star who repeatedly illuminated the sport, her five Group 1 victories taking us from an Oaks romp at Epsom to that outstanding Chantilly tour de force in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
It left us wanting more. Unfortunately, the amount of time afforded us to enjoy Enable during 2018 was short. So, too, was the margin by which she famously became a back-to-back winner of the Arc. It was not much, but it was enough, and it turned a magnificent filly into one of the greats.
