A modern-day great like Kauto deserves his spot too - but these things take time

My pick for greatest ever race did not feature on our shortlist. In fact, most of my favourite races did not appear in it either. As a child of the 90s, many of the races talked about in hallowed terms are nothing more than grainy YouTube videos and, try as I might, that might be all they ever can be for me.

There is no denying their place in racing history and it is impossible to discredit the horses involved. I watched their races back and read the passionate arguments made by my colleagues over the past few weeks and recognise those races were great, but it is a greatness I can only view second-hand.

Arkle triumphing over Mill House in the Gold Cup will never be as real to me as to Brough Scott, who watched from the stands that chilly day in 1964. Nor can I hold a greater fondness for Grundy and Bustino's duel at Ascot than Jessica Harrington, who celebrated with the winning trainer in 1975.
