Find out which horses could break into the elite group of horses this term

Racing Post Ratings guru Steve Mason analyses this season's great hopes

In more than 30 years of Racing Post Ratings only 16 horses have returned figures of 180 or above. Of these, just ten managed it on more than one occasion with, unsurprisingly, Kauto Star (191) and Desert Orchid (189) posting the best tallies with eight apiece.

Fellow Gold Cup winners Denman (184), Don Cossack (182) and Long Run (181) managed four each, while Moscow Flyer (182), who falls below Sprinter Sacre (190), Master Minded (186) and Altior (183) in best-figure terms, just bettered that trio in terms of frequency by posting three 180+ figures.

You have to go back to Cyrname (181) at Ascot in 2019 to find the most recent example of a horse to break into the 180s but, among the chasing fraternity at least, there is sufficient strength in depth to suggest there could be at least another addition to the elite list of performers this season.
