It was appropriate that Hertfordshire-based Bradley Gibbs rode a treble when the season opened at Pyle, near Bridgend, on Sunday.

Gibbs may train from a yard that is much closer to London than Cardiff, but he is undoubtedly Welsh, and his three winners buoyed a small but loyal crowd of locals who ventured out in ferocious wind and gusting rain.

Men's champion James King is favourite to retain his title, but Gibbs, 27, has been a contender in the past, and that was a brilliant start.
